A wonderfully striking vintage Italian art glass swan, attributed to Murano/Venetian manufacture and dating to approximately the 1950s–1960s. This little piece is quite extraordinary in the light. In ordinary daylight, the swan is formed from rich ruby-red glass layered with yellow-green and clear glass, creating wonderful changes of colour as the light passes through its sculptural body. The elegant neck sweeps upwards into a dramatic curl, with delicate clear applied glass details forming the head and wings. At the opposite end, a pointed green glass tail completes the wonderfully fluid form. The layered construction is characteristic of the sommerso style for which mid-century Murano glass became particularly celebrated. When illuminated under ultraviolet light, the glass produces an exceptionally vivid neon-green fluorescence, as shown in the photographs. This strong green fluorescence is consistent with uranium-containing glass, which was used by a number of Murano glassmakers to create yellow-green layers within colourful sommerso pieces during the mid-20th century. The UV photograph shows the actual piece offered for sale. Comparable documented Murano swans from the 1950s–60s are known combining ruby-red glass with uranium yellow-green and clear glass in this manner. As the piece is unlabelled and unsigned, no individual Murano factory or designer is being attributed. It is therefore offered as attributed to Murano/Venetian manufacture based upon its construction, form and comparison with documented period examples. *Details* Object: Swan / bird figurine Material: Hand-worked art glass Style/technique: Sommerso-style layered glass Colours: Ruby red, yellow-green and clear UV response: Strong vivid green fluorescence Origin: Attributed to Murano/Venice, Italy Period: Mid-20th century Date: Circa 1950s–1960s Maker: Unknown / unlabelled Approximate dimensions: Height: 11 cm / 4¼ inches Width: approximately 6–7 cm / 2½ inches Please also see the measurement photographs. *Condition* In good vintage condition overall, with age-related signs of previous display and handling. There are surface scratches and scuffs to the glass, including a more concentrated area of scratching to one side of the body, which can be seen in the close-up photographs. There is also a small surface abrasion/scrape to the tip of the green tail. On physical inspection this does not appear or feel to be a conventional chip, and there is no obvious piece of glass missing; however, the area has been photographed closely so that buyers can assess it for themselves. Small bubbles, variations and irregularities within the glass may be present and are consistent with its hand-worked manufacture. I have not identified any obvious major cracks or significant losses. Please study all photographs carefully, particularly the close-up condition photographs, as they form an important part of the description and condition report. The wear has been taken into consideration when pricing the piece. *A Note from FS Vintage Co.* All of our items are genuine vintage or antique pieces and have been loved throughout their lifetime.
