A wonderfully clever piece of 1960s design — an original Ronson Varaflame “Empire” concealed table lighter, dating from approximately 1964–1969.
At first glance, this elegant little object appears to be a decorative silver-plated lidded urn or pot. Lift away the upper section, however, and the secret is revealed: hidden beneath the decorative cover is a Ronson Varaflame butane lighter mechanism.
The Empire formed part of Ronson's range of decorative table lighters designed to disguise their practical purpose and blend more elegantly into the home.
Made in the USA, the Empire has a wonderfully classical shape, standing on three small feet with a gently waisted body, raised beaded borders and a removable domed cover topped by an urn-shaped finial.
The original manufacturer's label remains attached underneath and reads:
“VARAFLAME
EMPIRE
fashioned by
RONSON
WOODBRIDGE, N.J., U.S.A.”
The Ronson Varaflame Empire was introduced in 1964 and appears to have had a relatively short production period, ending around 1969. Collector references describe the Empire as an uncommon model, making this a particularly interesting example of mid-century Ronson design.
A fabulous little conversation piece and collectible for enthusiasts of vintage Ronson, smoking memorabilia, mid-century design and unusual barware.

*Condition*
In good vintage condition overall, showing age-related wear consistent with a piece approximately 60 years old.
There are surface scratches, scuffs, tarnishing and areas of patination to the silver-plated finish. Some oxidation/corrosion is visible to the undersides of the feet, and there is age-related wear/discolouration to the interior.
The original Ronson identification label remains present on the underside.
The concealed lighter mechanism is also present and appears substantially complete.
The lighter has not been fuelled or tested and is therefore being sold as a vintage collectible. Working order cannot be guaranteed and servicing may be required before use.
