A wonderfully elegant vintage Franklin Mint “Black Basalt” Cat, from the collectible Curio Cabinet Cats Collection, dating to 1988.
This striking little cat is modelled seated with its tail curled neatly around its paws and finished in a beautifully understated matte black, contrasted by a gold-coloured collar and tiny bell.
The design takes its name and inspiration from the tradition of black basalt ware, renowned for its smooth, rich black appearance and particularly associated with neoclassical decorative ceramics. This Franklin Mint interpretation captures that sophisticated look beautifully in miniature.
The underside bears the original gold-coloured Franklin Mint marking:
©1988 THE FRANKLIN MINT
The design is catalogued within the Curio Cabinet Cats collection as Black Basalt, with this example being the matte black, gold-collar variant.
A lovely piece for an existing Franklin Mint Curio Cabinet Cats collection, as well as a rather stylish little vintage black cat in its own right.

*Condition*
In very good vintage condition overall.
The matte black body displays beautifully and the contrasting gold-coloured collar and bell remain present and attractive. The ears, paws and curled tail appear intact, with no obvious chips, cracks or repairs identified.
There is some age-related rubbing and surface marking to the underside of the base, as clearly shown in the photographs. This does not detract from the appearance when displayed.
Please study all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description and condition report.
