A wonderfully characterful vintage “Bootscraper” Cat from The Franklin Mint Curio Cabinet Cats Collection, dating to 1986.
Modelled in black cast iron, this miniature sculpture depicts a cat striding purposefully forward, with one front paw raised and its extraordinarily long tail curving upwards behind it.
The design was inspired by traditional cat-shaped cast-iron bootscrapers, once a familiar sight outside homes and used for scraping dirt and mud from footwear before entering the house. Franklin Mint's original information for the design refers to this particular style of cat bootscraper as “Shadow the Cat.”
It's a wonderfully clever miniature interpretation of a much larger piece of historic household ironwork — and one of the more unusual designs within the Curio Cabinet Cats collection.
The underside retains its original circular Franklin Mint label, clearly marked:
